A week after the taxonomy was created, Ava provided the first official case study.
Sienna didn’t even look surprised.
“You’re kidding,” she said, reaching for her wine.
“I thought he was different,” Ava replied.
“Of course you did.”
“Sienna.”
“What? They always seem different in the opening chapters.”
Ava narrowed her eyes.
“You’re enjoying this far too much.”
“Field research,” Sienna said calmly.
She opened her Notes app.
“Right,” she continued. “Let’s document the emotional weather event first.”
Ava groaned.
Sienna typed the title.
**The Magnetic Drifter.**
He was magnetic in the way thunderstorms are magnetic.
Quiet.
Charged.
Slightly elsewhere even when standing directly in front of you.
His affection arrived in waves.
Intoxicating when present.
Destabilising when absent.
Young Ava called it chemistry.
Older Ava would call it intermittent reinforcement.
Back then, she learned to lean forward around him.
To soften her needs.
To wait out his silences like passing weather systems.
“You spent a lot of time bracing around him,” Sienna said eventually.
Ava frowned.
“Bracing?”
“Waiting for the next shift,” Sienna replied.
“The next mood. The next message. The next disappearance disguised as complexity.”
Ava stared into her glass for a moment.
“It’s strange,” she said slowly.
“What is?”
“Not everyone makes you feel like that.”
Sienna immediately picked up her phone again.
“Well,” she said, “that is literally why we invented the taxonomy.”
Years later, Ava saw him again unexpectedly.
And something noticeable happened.
Nothing.
No tightening in her chest.
No performance anxiety.
No internal audition.
No shrinking.
She felt… still.
And the contrast was breathtaking.
Not between him and another man.
Between who she had been…
and who she was now.
“You didn’t even flinch,” Sienna said afterward, almost impressed.
Ava blinked.
“I used to flinch?”
Sienna gave her a look.
“Ava. You practically developed atmospheric monitoring.”
Ava laughed quietly into her glass.
Then her expression softened as she looked out across the city lights.
“Maybe storms were the point,” she said quietly.
“You feel chemistry… but not safety.”
Sienna considered this carefully.
Then she opened her Notes app again.
“Maybe,” she replied.
“But I still think we’re waiting for clear skies.”
