“You realise,” Sienna said over coffee, “that you might have accidentally summoned a man.”

Ava didn’t even look up.

“I did not summon a man.”

“You literally said,” Sienna continued, already opening her Notes app,
“‘Come to me, Black Knight.’”

“That was metaphorical.”

“That,” Sienna said, “is how all dangerous things begin.”

Ava pushed her coffee toward her like it might defend her.

“He’s just… different.”

Sienna nodded, typing.

“Define different.”

Ava hesitated.

Which Sienna also noted.

“He’s calm,” Ava said finally.

“Calm,” Sienna repeated.

“Not boring,” Ava added quickly.

“Important distinction,” Sienna said.

“He listens,” Ava continued.

“Rare,” Sienna murmured.

“And when he says something… he means it.”

Sienna paused typing.

Looked up.

Now that was interesting.

Ava shifted slightly in her seat.

“And he doesn’t rush things.”

Sienna leaned back.

“Suspicious.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

“Because it is,” Sienna replied. “Men either rush or disappear. Those are the two settings.”

“He’s neither.”

Sienna tilted her head.

“Then we may have a developing case.”

Ava exhaled.

“Or I’m projecting.”

Sienna nodded.

“Also possible.”

“Helpful.”

“I aim for accuracy, not comfort.”

There was a pause.

Ava stared into her coffee.

“You know what the problem is?”

Sienna didn’t answer.

She waited.

“It’s almost too easy,” Ava said quietly.

Sienna didn’t type that.

She just watched her.

“No confusion,” Ava continued.
“No mixed signals. No guessing.”

She looked up.

“That’s not normal.”

Sienna smiled slightly.

“No,” she said. “It’s not.”

Ava leaned back.

“So now what?”

Sienna lifted her phone again.

“Well,” she said, completely calm,

“we document.”

Ava dropped her head into her hands.

“Of course we do.”

Sienna typed one final line.

Then turned the screen slightly toward Ava.

Ava groaned.

“I hate this system.”

Sienna sipped her coffee.

“You love this system.”
