Sienna slid a coffee across the table.
“All right,” she said. “Which weather pattern are we dealing with today?”
Ava went pale.
“None.”
Sienna leaned in, studying her.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Ava nodded.
“Close.”
She didn’t know where to put the intensity she’d been carrying.
After the Wounded, it left a strange, echoing emptiness.
And then…
The Ghost appeared.
At first, it felt promising.
Ava tried to explain it to Sienna over coffee.
“It was intense to start,” she said. “Everything seemed fine.”
“Until?” Sienna asked.
Ava looked down at her phone.
“The texts started slowing down.”
Sienna waited.
“And?”
“The replies got vague.”
“Then…’ Ava paused.
“Nothing.”
Ava stared at her phone.
“You start rereading the last message,” she said quietly, “like maybe you missed something.”
Sienna nodded slightly.
“And then?”
Ava hesitated.
“Zero.”
She stared at the blank screen.
“Maybe he’s busy,” she said quietly.
Sienna leaned forward.
“No,” she said gently.
“He’s ghosting.”
Ava sighed.
“It explains the silences,” she said. “You never really get used to that.”
Sienna reached across the table and squeezed her hand.
“It’s over then,” Ava said softly.
Sienna nodded.
“The train guy would text,” Ava added after a moment.
Sienna considered that.
Then she reached for her phone.
Ava groaned.
“Oh no.”
Sienna opened her Notes app.
“Closure is overrated,” she said calmly.
“Silence is also an answer.”
