A Coffee, A Nod, A Moment – What if I said Yes?

2–3 minutes

·

I was sitting on a park bench, minding my own business, when a tall, handsome man approached the other bench with a coffee in hand. Out of nowhere, he asked, “Would you like some company?” I was taken aback and politely declined. He nodded and continued his walk to the other bench. I thought to myself, “That was a nice gesture. Why didn’t I say yes?”

It was a lovely moment… the unexpected kindness of a stranger offering company on a park bench. I sat there, quietly processing it. While I said no, I also wondered why I didn’t accept.

As he walked away to the next bench, his coffee gently steaming in the morning air, I felt a pang of regret. Not for the offer itself… I had been comfortable and content, enjoying the quiet… but for the opportunity I had missed 😔.

I turned my gaze back to the open book in my lap, but I didn’t read the next line. Instead, I scanned the park: the soft rustle of leaves, the distant laughter of children, the gentle hum of traffic, and behind it all, the lingering question: “What if I had said yes?”

I imagined what could have happened. Perhaps he would have sat down with me, coffee in hand, and introduced himself. We could have had a light and casual conversation or we might have talked about the weather, the book I was reading, or the park itself.

Maybe, just maybe, I would have discovered something interesting about him.. his job, his reason for being on the bench, or his preference for coffee over tea. Or, we might have simply sat in companionable silence, both of us comfortable in our own space yet connected by that small human bridge of conversation.

Then I thought, but there’s another side to it. By choosing no, I preserved my solitude and time for my thoughts. Maybe I was tired, needed peace, or didn’t feel like opening a new chapter with someone. That’s okay too, right?

As the sun lowers and shadows lengthen, I feel a gentle resolve but next time someone offers a small gesture, like a company or a chat, I’ll be open to the possibility. It’s not because I have to or feel obligated, but because I might discover something new: a new person, a new story, or a new moment.

I felt a flutter of excitement 🤗 which I hadn’t felt in a while. I close my book, stand up, stretch, happy that I’d allowed myself the time to reflect. With a little more intention and a little more “yes” for the next bench and person, I walk away.
