The balcony had seen everything.
Bad dates.
Good wine.
Questionable decisions.
But those coffee meetings were all about the real deal. Today, they were witnessing yet another taxonomy update.
After The Placeholder, a quiet descends.
No sparks.
No storms.
No raised voices.
Just calm.
For the first time in a long while, Ava met someone who seemed… reasonable.
Sienna recognised the pattern immediately.
Another entry for the Black Knight Taxonomy.
Today’s classification: **The Almost**.
The strange thing about The Almost was that nothing was wrong.
He was kind.
Thoughtful.
Present.
Dinner plans happened when they said they would.
Texts were answered.
Conversations flowed easily.
Therapy language.
Linen shirts.
Attachment styles discussed over pasta.
He could articulate growth beautifully.
He just hadn’t embodied it.
“Didn’t walk the talk,” Sienna said.
Ava exhaled slowly.
“Yeah.”
“He spoke about vulnerability,” Ava said, “but kept his guard up.”
“He’s conceptually evolved,” Sienna replied, unimpressed.
But something essential was missing.
Not chaos.
Not chemistry.
Just… current.
On paper it looked like progress.
In reality, something wasn’t moving.
“You look sad,” Sienna said over coffee.
Ava nodded.
“He’s good.”
“That’s not the problem,” Sienna said.
Ava stared into her cup.
“I keep waiting for something to arrive.”
“What?”
Ava thought about it.
“I don’t know.”
Sienna didn’t answer immediately.
“You’re not confused though,” she said eventually.
Ava shook her head.
“No.”
“I’m not.”
Earlier Ava would have tried to make it work.
Adjusted.
Encouraged the spark.
Talked herself into certainty.
This time she didn’t.
She let the silence be honest.
Later that evening, waiting for her train, Ava stood quietly on the platform.
No urgency.
No overthinking.
Just… still.
A few steps away, a man stood with the same kind of stillness.
Not checking his phone.
Not scanning the crowd.
Just present.
For a moment, she noticed him.
Then the train arrived.
And like everything else that didn’t quite register…
she let it pass.
Later that night, Ava stood on the balcony with Sienna.
“No storms,” Sienna observed.
“No,” Ava agreed.
“Just cold,” Sienna said, reaching for a blanket.
Ava watched the quiet city for a moment.
“I think I know what calm feels like now.”
Sienna smiled.
“Midnight calm?”
Ava laughed softly.
“Maybe.”
They stood there for a while.
Sienna opened her Notes app.
“You *should* feel more than you do.”
