Every Morning With You

2–3 minutes

·

Every morning, Pete and I would set out on our familiar route … sneakers tied, hearts light, and eyes half‑open. The sun was just stretching its first rays across the sky, and the air smelled like possibilities… and, soon, coffee.

Just a block in, we always run into our neighbour, Mr. Harper, and his indefatigable terrier, *Biscuit*. Mr. Harper loves two things intensely: talking and *Biscuit’s* endless energy.

“Morning, you bright sparks!” he calls before we even reach the fence. Biscuit is already tugging at the leash, eager for attention … or perhaps just convinced it’s stick‑throwing time.

“Morning, Mr. Harper!” I say with a smile.

“Beautiful day!” he says, always the first to start.

“Yep,” Pete replies, “and Biscuit 🐶 looks ready to sprint circles around us.”

“Oh, he will, he *does*,” Mr. Harper agrees proudly. “You two get your steps in … but nothing beats these little legs and this big heart!” He pats Biscuit, who barks in full enthusiastic agreement.

We wave goodbye as Mr. Harper launches into the day’s commentary on everything from the weather forecast (“Perfect for morning wanders!”) to the merits of early rising (“Absolutely worth it!”). Pete and I continue on, smiling at how his cheerful chatter always kick‑starts our own morning rhythm.

We walk side by side, me chattering about dreams from the night before, Pete grinning and pretending he *totally* understood my weird sleep‑logic. Our knees made their opinions known at times … gentle creaks like old doors opening … but we’ve learned things the hard way, mostly through knees that sometimes send tiny protest notes like, “Hello? We said walk, not marathon!” or “Is that a hill? Really??”

Halfway through our stroll, we reached our favourite café with the bright blue door. Pete lifted the latch and gave me that familiar wink 😉, like we’d just unlocked a secret level in life’s big game. Inside, the barista already knew our order: two flat whites, extra warm, extra quiet for the first sip.

We’d find our usual corner seat by the window. I’d sip … slow and grateful … and Pete would take his first gulp with a satisfied sigh that sounded like a tiny drumroll.

“Mornings with coffee are unbeatable,” Pete declared between sips.

I agreed, as I’d watched the day awaken.

Coffee in hand, we talked about everything and nothing: how the clouds looked picturesque, how our knees thought hills were personal attacks, how Biscuit *definitely* had energy we could only dream of, and what holiday we’d choose next.

By the time we finished our coffee, the sun was higher, the world was brighter, and we were ready to head home … hearts warmer for the morning together.

And that’s how each day began: with steps, laughter, affectionate banter … and just the right amount of coffee ☕️.

Every morning, Pete and I hit the pavement early, running into our chatty neighbour, Mr. Harper, and his hyper terrier, Biscuit. After some light banter, we’d pop into our favourite café for flat whites. We’d enjoy the sunrise, chat about life, and feel grateful for these cosy moments. It’s the best start!
