*(But first, coffee)*
Ten years ago, Ava said something she probably should have kept to herself.
“Come to me, Black Knight.”
It wasn’t a ritual. No glowing runes. No dramatic chanting.
Just a glass of wine, a city skyline, and a slightly theatrical moment.
Sienna nearly inhaled her drink laughing.
“Right,” she said. “I’m sure the universe will get right on that.”
And because the universe apparently has a sense of humour…
He showed up.
Not on a white horse either.
More like stepping off an evening train.
No trumpet fanfare. No shining armour.
Just a quiet presence that made Ava pause.
There was something about him.
Not dramatic. Not mythical.
Just the kind of steadiness that makes a crowded room feel a little calmer.
Ava had grown up reading stories about knights… honour, loyalty, the sort of romance that belonged in old books.
Modern life didn’t really do knights.
Or so she thought.
Then this man appeared with the unmistakable air of someone who simply handled things.
No performance.
No fuss.
Just good manners with a quiet sense of purpose.
A polite nod from him felt surprisingly rare.
A sincere smile felt even rarer.
Sienna noticed the shift immediately.
“You realise,” she said later over coffee, “that you’ve just invented a mythology.”
Ava blinked.
“A mythology?”
“Yes,” Sienna said, opening her Notes app.
“The Black Knight.”
Ava laughed.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“Am I?” Sienna replied.
Because somewhere between that glass of wine, that ridiculous declaration, and the man who happened to arrive…
A story had begun.
Not about destiny.
Not really.
More like two women trying to make sense of modern love using the oldest language they knew.
Myths.
And that’s how the Black Knight Taxonomy began.
Coffee first.
Then research.
Sienna raised her glass.
“To the Black Knight,” she said.
Ava laughed.
“Let’s see if he survives modern dating.
