The Black Knight – Midnight Edition

Man a woman on train platform. He picks up a note she had dropped. They look at each other as if familiar symbolic of his archetype, calm - Black Knight - Midnight Edition

It wasn’t dramatic.

No storm.

No spark.

No shift in the air that announced itself.

Just… an ordinary evening.

Ava hadn’t planned to be there.

She’d taken the long way home.

No reason.

No urgency.

Just walking.

The station was quieter than usual.

Late enough that the rush had passed.

Early enough that the night hadn’t settled.

That in-between hour.

She stood on the platform, still.

Not scrolling.

Not searching.

Just… there.

The train arrived.

Doors opened.

People stepped off in the usual rhythm…

movement, noise, fragments of conversation.

And then…

he stepped onto the platform.

Not like an entrance.

Just… arriving.

Dark coat.

Unhurried.

Completely at ease in the space he occupied.

Ava looked up.

Not because something pulled her.

Because nothing did.

And that was the difference.

No rush of adrenaline.

No sudden awareness.

No instinct to perform or adjust.

Just a quiet, unfamiliar stillness.

He moved closer, stopping a few steps away.

Close enough to share the space.

Far enough to remain a stranger.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then…

“You dropped this.”

Ava blinked.

She hadn’t realised.

A folded receipt sat between them.

Ava blinked.

“Thanks,” she said.

He nodded once.

Not lingering.

Not retreating.

Just present.

And then something in her mind…

not a thought, not quite a memory…

shifted.

A platform.

A passing moment.

A stillness she hadn’t paid attention to.

Another time.

Another place.

She looked at him again.

Properly this time.

Not searching.

Not analysing.

Recognising.

“Oh,” she said softly.

He didn’t react to the word.

But something in his expression settled, as if he understood it anyway.

“You’ve been here before,” she said.

A small pause.

Then…

“I don’t think I ever left,” he replied.

No performance.

No weight behind it.

Just… truth, spoken simply.

Ava felt it then.

Not a spark.

Not a pull.

Alignment.

The kind that didn’t ask anything of her.

Didn’t require adjustment.

Didn’t feel like something she had to earn.

Just… met.

The train doors closed behind him.

The platform quieted again.

And for the first time in a decade…

there was no question of what this was.

No classification.

No analysis.

No footnote.

Just presence.

Later, on the balcony, Sienna didn’t ask many questions.

She didn’t need to.

Ava stood beside her, quieter than usual.

Not unsettled.

Not excited.

Steady.

“Well?” Sienna said.

Ava took a moment.

Then…

“I didn’t feel anything.”

Sienna raised an eyebrow.

Ava smiled slightly.

“I didn’t need to.”

A pause.

Then Sienna reached for her phone.

Of course, she did.

She stopped.

Considered it.

Then added one more line.

Ava glanced at the screen.

Then back at the city.

“No storms,” she said quietly.

Sienna smiled.

“Finally.”

“We may have found him.”
