Long enough to notice. Not long enough to ignore. Timing can change the meaning of the same words and now... it's complicated.
“I saw it,” Ava said.
Sienna nodded. “Of course you did.”
“I didn’t reply.”
“Of course you didn’t.”
Ava frowned. “I wasn’t *not* replying.”
Sienna tilted her head. “Mm. What do we call it, then?”
Ava thought for a second.
“…a pause.”
Sienna smiled into her coffee.
“A pause is five minutes.”
Ava glanced down at her phone.
“It hasn’t been that long.”
Sienna didn’t even look.
“How long?”
Ava hesitated.
“…yesterday.”
Sienna nodded slowly. “Ah. A *developing situation*.”
Ava sighed. “I just didn’t know what to say.”
“And now?”
“Now I definitely don’t know what to say.”
Sienna leaned back.
“Classic. The longer you wait, the more articulate you’re expected to be.”
Ava winced.
“That feels unfair.”
“It’s not unfair,” Sienna said.
“It’s cumulative.”
A pause.
Ava unlocked her phone.
Read the message again.
Still simple. Still normal. Still waiting.
“I think,” she said slowly,
“it’s become more about the gap than the reply.”
Sienna nodded.
“Yes. The gap always gets louder.”
Silence.
Ava typed.
Stopped.
Deleted.
Locked the phone.
“I’ll answer later.”
Sienna raised an eyebrow.
“Will you?”
Ava picked up her coffee.
Took a sip.
Considered.
“…yes.”
A pause.
She unlocked her phone again.
“Just quickly.”
Sienna smiled.
“Of course.”
