“Hey, Sienna!”

Ava ordered a coffee.

Sienna raised two fingers to the barista.

“Make that two.”

Ava slid into the chair opposite her.

After **The Wildfire**, Ava had slowed down. For the first time in a while, she felt content approaching dating without the pressure of expectations.

That’s when **The Placeholder** appeared.

Ava was halfway through explaining the relationship.

“He was attentive… consistent… thoughtful.”

Sienna listened carefully.

Then she asked one question.

“Did he ever talk about the future?”

Ava hesitated.

“Not really.”

Sienna nodded slowly.

“Nothing wrong,” she said.

Ava waited.

“Nothing moving forward either.”

Ava frowned.

“He’s not building a life,” Sienna continued. “He’s passing time”

She stirred her coffee.

“Just filling a gap.”

“He’s not choosing you,” she said calmly. “He’s just staying.”

Ava blinked.

“So I was a… placeholder?”

Sienna shrugged lightly.

“Temporary seating.”

Ava stared at her.

“You’re unbelievable.”

Sienna glanced past Ava mid-conversation.

“”That one’s calm,’ she said quietly.

Ava turned, but he was already moving away.

“Who?”

“No one,” Sienna said, picking up her coffee.

“Just… an observation.”

Sienna continues the conversation.

‘Did he get you to hold his beer?”

Ava looked sheepish.

“How did you know?”

Sienna reached for her phone.

Ava groaned immediately.

“Oh no.”

Sienna opened the Notes app.

“Time passes, nothing moves.”
